Brühlmann Areal, Schaffhausen, 2025—2026, Competition 2nd Prize

Extra Moenia

The urban design concept creates a distinctive open space through two building volumes. The two volumes frame the existing street spaces and form a semi-public courtyard, which provides an attractive communal space for residents.

Through references to historical structures, the re-establishment of viewpoints and the use of vegetation and water, urban spaces that shape the neighbourhood’s identity are created, defining the transformation of the neighbourhood both spatially and atmospherically.

The public facilities are consistently oriented towards Schwabentor, Adlerstrasse and Ringstrasse, bringing life to the public space and anchoring the building in urban life. The ground floor is understood as a stage rather than a threshold: a place where the private enters the public sphere and urban interaction becomes possible.
